Prepare for your Louisiana driving test
Use this guide to find Louisiana licensing resources, choose your practice category and plan what to study next.
Your official starting point
Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Louisiana OMV’s ExpressLane is the official starting point for driver-license services. Its older expresslane.org address redirects to the state’s newer expresslane.la.gov domain.
Use the official portal to locate the driver guide and the instructions for your license type. Confirm education, permit and testing steps there before using a third-party study schedule.

Car: what to study
Build a study routine around road signs, priority decisions and safe vehicle control.
- Signs and lane markings
- Explain what a sign requires you to do, then compare it with the pavement markings. Learn the action as well as the symbol.
- Intersections and observations
- Work through who may proceed, where to look and whether the available gap is safe. Review the state manual whenever the right-of-way rule is unclear.
- Speed and space
- Practice choosing a safe response to reduced visibility, nearby traffic and changing road conditions. Look up state-specific numerical limits in the official handbook.
- Road-test preparation
- Review stops, turns, lane position, reversing and parking with a qualified supervising driver. Use the simulator to rehearse observations before practicing in a vehicle.
Your next practice task: Use written practice to find weak topics. Then explain a stop or turn aloud: what you see, what you check and when you would proceed.
CDL: what to study
Separate general commercial knowledge from the vehicle class, equipment and endorsements you plan to use.
- Vehicle inspection
- Study an inspection as a sequence: identify a component, explain what you check and describe a condition that would prevent safe operation. Use your state’s current inspection material.
- Space and hazard planning
- Review how a larger vehicle changes your view, turning space and stopping decisions. Discuss hazards early rather than treating them as last-second maneuvers.
- Equipment and endorsements
- Build a list of the sections relevant to your intended vehicle. Air brakes, combination vehicles, passengers, school buses and hazardous materials require their own preparation where applicable.
- Training and testing
- Check the state’s commercial manual and FMCSA training information before arranging tests. A general question set does not establish that you have completed required training or an endorsement module.
Your next practice task: Write down your intended class, vehicle equipment and endorsements. Use that list to choose manual chapters and confirm the required training and tests with the licensing agency.

Motorcycle: what to study
Study rider observations and control skills separately from ordinary car-driving knowledge.
- Visibility and protective equipment
- Review how to make yourself visible, choose suitable protective equipment and check the motorcycle before riding. Consult the state guide for licensing and equipment rules.
- Position and escape space
- Study how lane position changes what you can see and how easily other drivers see you. Identify an escape option before a conflict develops.
- Braking and cornering
- Use the rider manual and qualified instruction to learn the relationship between speed, traction and control. A written explanation cannot replace supervised riding practice.
- Training and endorsement
- Check the state’s motorcycle permit, rider-course and skills-test information. Do not assume a car license or a car practice score covers motorcycle licensing.
Your next practice task: Choose one riding situation, identify the visibility or traction concern and explain a safer response. Use an approved rider-training resource to connect the theory to practical control.
Before you book an exam in Louisiana
- Identify your license category and applicant situation, such as a first license, endorsement or transfer.
- Use Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles to check documents, eligibility, training and the current appointment process.
- Read the current manual, note weak topics and repeat practice with explanations.
- For a practical test, confirm the vehicle, insurance and accompanying-driver instructions with the agency.
SimulaDrive is independent. General safety practice. State-specific rules are not yet reviewed for this selection. The 3D simulator teaches car decisions on an NJ-inspired circuit; it does not reproduce every state’s road test.
